GBWD Episode 10, Part 1: Jan Dommerholt – Dry Needling, Deferred Pain, and Acupuncture

Jan Dommerholt believes he is very lucky, and his expertise in dry needling and referred pain is a matter of circumstance. While practicing at a hospital in Washington, DC in the late 1980s, he decided to sit in on a workshop by renowned White House physician Janet Travell. Three-and-a-half hours later, and after a follow-up meeting with Travell over tea and cookies, Dommerholt’s understanding of treatment was turned on its head, and the direction for the rest of his career had been set.

I consider Jan Dommerholt to be an expert in trigger point dry needling, and he has taught me a lot of what I now know about treating referred pain through trigger points. He has served as a representative for the practice of dry needling by physical therapists for years, even defending the profession in courtrooms and helping to legitimize dry needling as a mainstream form of pain management.

Jan joined me for the latest episode of the Get Back with Dombek podcast, and detailed how his career began, his opinions on acupuncture, and why he believes that most people misdiagnose their own pain.
